If you aren't firing until 10 degrees into the downstroke, then this would be lowering the compression ratio somewhat at the point of firing.

Between 0 and 10 degrees is this when the fuel and air are inserted? It would seem to take some pretty high compression equipment to insert the fuel.

Is the fuel inserted into the cylinder at a pressure around 50 to 75 bar?

I have been following the new hybrid and electric trends the best I can. I cannot wait until we take the big turn with these innovative hybrids. It's really just crazy how the industry is acting as though the electric cars are a new idea that will help our pollution problem. The electric car came before the gas car. And now the engines are getting better than ever with the new technology. Hopefully it really hits the market hard and we can roll out new looks of hybrids that appeal to everyones tastes.

I must say again, what an incredible new engine. Great stuff Scuderi.

Do you need a starter battery? the car should be able to start off of compressed air. Add high pressure air tanks and refill them overnight. The compressor losses can be avoided for many miles. choose the tank size that matches your daily driving. The overnight heat of compression can be used to heat household hot water, or, for space heat. Why not use bleed compressed air to provide the air conditioning, doing away with the a/c compressor?

With the Air Hybrid, EMF safety is not a concern as in the Electric Hybrid Vehicles. This is more recognized as a problem in Countries other than the US, such as Sweadan.

Sal's explanation is excellent; however, I believe it does not go far enough in describing the potential benefits of the Scuderi Air-Hybrid. If my comments are off the mark I assume someone from Scuderi will correct me but here is how I see it. My first point is the incredible benefit the Scuderi engine gets in the way it uses the compressed air energy reclaimed from braking. A typical car engine uses up approximately 50% of its output compressing air for combustion. Flip that around and it means if you don’t have to compress Air you will get double the Horsepower out of the engine. So when acceleration is called for, the Scuderi Engine can stop compressing air and run off the air tank for a short while. The estimates I have heard is 20 secs which is plenty of time to accelerate. Example the 1 liter Scuderi Engine is supposed to get 140 hp when running normally. Switch to running off the air tank and you have 280 hp out of a 1 liter engine while accelerating. A two liter Scuderi engine which is about the equivalent size of a small VW engine potentially could put out a Whopping 560 hp on acceleration running off the air tank. My Second point would be that because of the air storage the engine should be able to be controlled to run On Demand. In other words, When stuck in traffic and the vehicle is stopped the engine can stop as well. Pressing on the gas pedal can now smoothly start the engine because compressed air is already available and unlike a normal engine it should not have to be rotated at some minimum RPM to create combustion. Picture all the cars on a California Freeway during rush hour sitting there generating emissions. With the Scuderi Air Hybrid this could be a thing of the past. The potential implications for downsizing car engines, fuel consumption and carbon emissions are staggering with the Air Hybrid concept.
